Ryan, Building Control

What is your role?Ryan

I started working as a building control surveyor apprentice, within the building control team.

When did you start here?

in September 2019 and am due to finish in June 2023.

Why did you choose to do an apprenticeship?

I believe it is the best way to be able to learn the job whilst getting a relevant qualification, as you get a greater understanding when working the job.

Did you come with GCSEs or A levels?

I had GCSEs and a BTEC Level 3 in Construction Management.

Did you have a clear idea of what you wanted to do?

I did not, I left school and done an apprenticeship at a different council in the same department then decided to get a Level three whilst working in retail once I completed that. I then found this great opportunity.

Why did you decide to work here?

From the interview it seemed like a good team to work in and a good opportunity.

What did you know about the council before you joined and what have you learnt about it so far?

I knew that they were two councils that had joined recently to make one larger council working together, I have learnt about what the area has to offer through a tour carried out for apprentices.

What apprenticeship are you undertaking, and do you have future plans?

I am doing a degree apprenticeship in building control surveying and I hope to go onto work my way up to be a senior surveyor at the council once it is complete.

What do you enjoy about working here?

I enjoy working within a great team, and there are many opportunities to learn more through various training courses and days out.

Apart from your apprenticeship have you had other opportunities to learn and develop, job-shadow or to be involved in different projects?

I shadow colleagues to go on site visits within my role, I have also experienced working within a different team to help them out which gives me an idea of how other services work.

What advice would you give to future applicants?

If you feel you have an interest in the apprenticeship, then go for it and don’t worry the team is very friendly, helpful and great to work with.
