Ana, Human Resources

What is your role?Photo of Ana

Human Resources apprentice.

When did you start here?

In August 2023 and I am meant to complete my Apprenticeship in August 2025.

Why did you choose to do an apprenticeship?

It gives me the opportunity to work while studying and allows me to get first-hand experience working within the sector that I’m getting my apprenticeship in.

Did you come with GCSEs or A Levels?

I came with both, GCSEs and A Levels.

Did you have a clear idea of what you wanted to do?

I knew I had an interest for the Human Resources profession and that I had to qualify if I wanted to work in that area.

Why did you decide to work here?

I live in West Suffolk, and I’ve always wanted to work for the community and to give back in any way that I could, therefore it was an easy decision for me to join the council and work for a local authority.

What did you know about the council before you joined and what have you learnt about it so far?

I knew the council did a great deal to improve people’s lives within West Suffolk and to build compassionate and empathetic communities who had the same core values. Having worked here for three months now, I have had the opportunity to gain insight into the council’s strategic priorities and core values.

What apprenticeship are you undertaking, and do you have future plans?

I want to complete my Level 3 HR qualification and, in a few years, complete my Level 5 to become a Human Resources Advisor.

What do you enjoy about working here?

So far, I enjoy everything about working for the council, I am part of an amazing team full of talented and caring people and I get to give back to the community, which has always been my ambition.

Apart from your apprenticeship, have you had other opportunities to learn and develop, job-shadow or to be involved in different projects?

I’ve had plenty of opportunities to learn and develop while being here, from shadowing my colleagues, to attending various training courses provided by the council such as Equality and Diversity.

What advice would you give to future applicants?

Just go for it! I do genuinely believe apprenticeships are extremely beneficial to anyone who is looking to further develop their own skills and abilities as well as their knowledge and you get to do so free of any student debts.
