Bryony, Planning Policy Apprentice

What role are you currently in, and what apprenticeship are you studying?

Apprentice - Planning Policy, studying Level 4 Town Planning.

Why did you choose to do an apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship was the best option for me as whilst I enjoy learning in a classroom environment, I came to the decision that university wasn’t the right pathway for me. By doing an apprenticeship I can combine the classroom experience with a hands-on role! I thrive in the office environment, the 9-5 structure and networking nature is something that I really enjoy, being able to enhance my learning alongside this, such an exciting opportunity.

Do you have an idea of what you would like to do after your apprenticeship?

After my apprenticeship I would like to continue my career pathway and work alongside my team as a qualified planning officer, whilst achieving further qualifications. I am looking forward to my career progression within the Planning and Growth team at West Suffolk council.

Did you know about the council before starting your apprenticeship, if so, what?

I knew of the council and its role within the community, for example: waste collections, housing and planning. But until I started in my position, I never realised all the work that goes on behind the scenes and the extent of what the council does.

What advice would you give to future applicants?

The main advice I would give to future applicants is to go for it! When applying for such a competitive role I never expected to get it, I feel so grateful to be in the position I am in. Take every opportunity that comes your way and learn as much as you can, not only from the apprenticeship course, but also from the people you will get to work alongside. Be confident, be yourself and don’t be afraid to ask for help. You have got this!

Name three things have you learnt whilst working at the council

  • Whilst working at the council I have learnt to be confident in myself and my skillset, even in times where a task feels daunting just having a go has helped my confidence no end!

  • I have also learnt so much about the workings of local government, there is so much that goes into it that I never thought about before. It really makes you notice how much work and how many people contribute to West Suffolk.

  • I have also learnt the importance of teamwork and asking for help, everyone on the team has different experiences and knowledge which is invaluable to any piece of work, and so important for learning!
