Harvey, Housing Options and Homelessness

Harvey What is your role?

Business Support Apprentice.

When did you start here?

I started in February 2023 and will finish in June 2024.

Why did you choose to do an apprenticeship?

To learn and gain experience while working gradually over time, as well as to get a qualification at the end of the apprenticeship.

Did you come with GCSEs or A Levels?

I came with GCSEs.

Did you have a clear idea of what you wanted to do?

Yes, I did.

Why did you decide to work here?

I thought it would be a good opportunity and would help me get eased into a bigger work environment with lots of employees instead of a smaller setting.

What did you know about the council before you joined and what have you learnt about it so far?

I knew the council deals with many community issues and well as waste management.

I learnt about many departments there are within the council and that the council is responsible for economic, social and environmental wellbeing. I have also learned about their values, PRIDE (People, Responsibility, Integrity, Dedication and Energy).

What apprenticeship are you undertaking, and do you have future plans?

I am undertaking the Business Administrator apprenticeship and I do not have future plans at this point in time.

What do you enjoy about working here?

My colleagues are extremely nice, and welcoming. When I started, I was very worried and nervous about how I would get on with everyone but ever since joining I have felt very comfortable within the team. Also, the work I do is very interesting, and I am constantly intrigued to learn more about what my team does and how each member's work links up to make every step possible to help out someone that may be struggling.

Apart from your apprenticeship, have you had other opportunities to learn and develop, job-shadow or to be involved in different projects?

Yes, I have had plenty of opportunities and there is always something I am learning or developing within my team. As the housing team is quite big, we have different teams and I have been able to shadow different colleagues from each part and have really seen how it all links together.

What advice would you give to future applicants?

It is a great opportunity as there are a wide range of different departments and everyone is welcoming.
