Isabella, Planning and Regulatory
What is your role?
My role is an apprentice planning technician. My team service area is the Planning and Regulatory department mainly dealing with giving out planning permission if a development is considered acceptable.
When did you start here?
I started in May 2020 and I am due to finish in May 2022.
Why did you choose to do an apprenticeship?
I choose this apprenticeship as I always had an interest in the building process and liked the thought of being able to help someone create their dream home. You get to see a variation of different developments and each is unique. The council is a brilliant service as well.
Did you come with GCSEs or A levels?
I had GCSES when I came here to do a Level 3.
Did you have a clear idea of what you wanted to do?
No I didn't, I was unsure what career I wanted so just searched about for a bit.
Why did you decide to work here?
Because I knew it had a great reputation for looking after its staff and encourages career progression.
What did you know about the council before you joined and what have you learnt about it so far?
When I started, I only knew what I read online and been told. When I started to work here I found that there are many more opportunities than I thought and they would help me progress.
What apprenticeship are you undertaking, and what do you have future plans?
I am doing a Level 3 Planning Technician Apprenticeship currently but would like to further my career in planning via a potential university degree.
What do you like about working here?
Seeing the different bits of planning and meeting new people.
Apart from your apprenticeship, have you had other opportunities to learn and develop, job-shadow or to be involved in different projects?
Yes, I can shadow, take part in the elections and day trips linked to my job.
What advice would you give to future applicants?
Go for it, have fun but take your time when completing a newly learnt task.
