Isabelle - Environment and Energy
I am a Bsc Geography student studying at the University of East Anglia (UEA), returning for my third year in September. I was attracted to this internship through its ability to give me work experience closely related to my degree. As someone passionate about the environment, I was keen to work on real projects in the public sector.
During the 12 weeks I worked on multiple projects the council are involved with to promote and encourage the net zero transition. A large part of this has been the Solar for Business scheme, which has involved communicating with businesses, running marketing campaigns, and analytics in the background. Working closely with local businesses and the communications team, I created a marketing video to promote the scheme on our website and social media. I identified businesses who may have suitable roofs for solar, and wrote letters to them explaining the scheme, which generated a lead!
Another project I worked on is the Home Upgrade Grant. I found this interesting as I could put into practice what I had learnt about energy efficiency at university. Using data analysis and GIS, I identified addresses of those most vulnerable to high energy bills this winter and sent letters describing the grant. It has been great to feel like the work I have completed here could have a positive impact on the community.
Smaller tasks I was involved with include changing air quality tubes and identifying suitable lampposts for EV charging.
Alongside my work with the Energy and Environment Team, I was also part of a wider intern project on the Cost of Living and Volunteering. The brief required us to run an event, we opted for 3 market stall days to promote volunteering in West Suffolk. This was a great opportunity to get out of my comfort zone and speak to the community about the research we were doing.
I have had a wonderful experience at West Suffolk Council and have learnt some valuable transferrable skills. I would highly recommend this internship to anyone considering applying!
