Jemima, Cemeteries Apprentice

What role are you currently in, and what apprenticeship are you studying?

Apprentice - Cemeteries. I am studying a Business Administration Level 3 apprenticeship. I am also a coordinator of the council’s Next Generation Network.

Why did you choose to do an apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship sounded like a much more interesting and beneficial way to learn about a subject, as you get to gain work experience and put what you learn into practice. I also thought that an apprenticeship would offer further opportunities, training and experiences to help prepare for my future career and for skill development.

Do you have an idea of what you would like to do after your apprenticeship?

Following my Level 3 apprenticeship, I am hoping to complete a degree apprenticeship and continue learning practically through the workplace. I am hoping to delve deeper into the cemetery and funeral industry or look into law to learn about wills and probate.

Did you know about the council before starting your apprenticeship, if so, what?

I knew that the council offered public services such as bin collecting, housing, helping our rough sleepers, as well as manging the different parks we have across the district. However, I wasn’t aware that West Suffolk Council owned any cemeteries until I came across the job. And then since working here, I have discovered how there are many more departments such as Environmental Health and Property Services.

What advice would you give to future applicants?

I would advise future applicants to be confident and be their true selves. West Suffolk Council has so much to offer for apprentices and new employees, such as training, webinars and sessions from external trainers that can be beneficial for improving skills, and everyone should come prepared to get stuck in. Speak with fellow apprentices and get involved with the Next Generation Network to meet new people, network and develop skills further.

Name three things have you learnt whilst working at the council

  • I have learnt that the council offers opportunities for young people to work together and to develop their skill sets further through activities and meetings led by the Next Generation Network
  • I have learnt and developed many skills throughout my time at the council that I can transfer to any future careers, such as time management, confidence, communication and teamwork
  • Working here has allowed me to have a taste of, and learn about, a professional working environment that will help prepare me for my next steps.
