Joshua - Leisure and Culture

YouTube video - Leisure and culture intern - Josh

I am currently in the process of completing an MSc in Accounting and Finance at the University of Lincoln, following on from a BA (Hons) Politics at the same place. I have been working within the Leisure and Culture department for the last 12 weeks, and my time here has been a mix of in office work, site visits, and working from home.

Intern 20201 - Josh DMy work within the department has been really varied. I was tasked with mapping individual water features owned by the council, and this involved a range of working methods; I have utilised office based programs such as Excel and GIS, however I have also spent a lot of my time out on site visiting these water features to inspect them. This was incredibly nice when the weather was hot, as a lot of water features are in parks such as Nowton and West Stow as well as places like Abbey Gardens, which made each site visit a bit of a tourist trip as well to take in the scenery and learn about the history of the places.

As well as the project within my team I also was a part of the intern project with the other interns. Our project was based around environmental change and how the council can reduce its environmental impact, and this was a really interesting and relevant topic. Within our team there was a variety of backgrounds and experience, and we worked really well and efficiently together to produce a piece of work that we are all proud of and that will provide a legacy for years to come.

I came into this internship with open expectations, and have come out with a lot more skills and experience than when I started. It has been a really enjoyable 12 weeks with a lot of variety and different challenges, and I would 100% recommend it to anyone who is considering it in the future.
