Libby, Housing Solutions Intern (2025)

During my 12 weeks as an intern in the Housing Options and Homelessness department I focused on developing the councils understanding on hidden homelessness. This was explored through a research and policy document and a training document and pilot study that put these documents into action. Being able to transfer my knowledge of policy into my time at West Suffolk Council has been an invaluable opportunity to build upon my academic studies.
My internship also focused on work outside the office. Throughout the 12 weeks I had the opportunity to go on outreach with the Rough Sleeper Team and speak to multiple individuals currently being assisted within our housing services. I shadowed our partnership officer who introduced me to external organisations the council works closely with. This introduced me to the importance of partnerships with local services, something I had not considered prior to my time here.
While working on my own department work, myself and the other interns delivered a group project focused on promoting domestic energy efficiency grants to the public. Working in a small intern cohort immediately gave us a friendly support network. The opportunity to work across departments encouraged us to constantly improve our project management and communication skills as we navigated new challenges.
I have thoroughly enjoyed the internship program and would recommend it to anyone wanting to work in the public sector. I have left the internship with an increased interest in pursuing a career in local government. If you are thinking of applying in 2026 make sure to show your genuine passion for your department during your application and be open to all the experiences thrown your way!
A massive thank you to my managers, team and everyone else in the council that has made my time so enjoyable, educational and welcoming.
