Lyla, Housing Options and Homelessness

Lyla - ApprenticeWhat is your role?

Business Administration Apprentice in Housing.

When did you start here?

I started in June 2023, and I finish in June 2025.

Why did you choose to do an apprenticeship?

I have never been an academic person and I didn’t enjoy the idea of going back to college. When I saw the job advertised, I knew that it would be a great opportunity and one that I didn't want to miss out on.

Did you come with GCSEs or A Levels?

GCSEs and a qualification in BTEC Business.

Did you have a clear idea of what you wanted to do?

No, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do but I always had an interest in housing.

Why did you decide to work here?

I have family that have previously worked in other parts of West Suffolk Council, so I knew that it was a great place to work.

What did you know about the council before you joined and what have you learnt about it so far?

I didn’t know much about the council before I started working here, I’ve learnt how much of an impact the council has on the public and how much help housing provides for people.

What apprenticeship are you undertaking, and do you have future plans?

I am currently undertaking a Level 3 Apprenticeship in Business Administration. I hope to complete my apprenticeship and develop my role even further.

What do you enjoy about working here?

I enjoy the flexibility of working in my role and my whole team. Everyone is so supportive and friendly. I also find my role in housing so rewarding and exciting as every day is different and a new challenge.

Apart from your apprenticeship, have you had other opportunities to learn and develop, job-shadow or to be involved in different projects?

I have shadowed multiple different teams and people from my wider team which has given me more an idea of what other teams do for the council. I learn and develop everyday within my role as everyday is different.

What advice would you give to future applicants?

Apprenticeships are so beneficial for someone who is ready to start their first career. If you are not 100% sure on what you want to do in the future, starting an apprenticeship can give you guidance as to what you enjoy and can potentially look for in future careers. Everyone is so welcoming and the council is a great place to start!
