Sam, Regulatory Services

Sam, Regulatory ServicesWhat is your role?

Environmental Health Practitioner

When did you start here?

September 2022 and I complete in 2026

Why did you choose to do an apprenticeship?

It’s the perfect opportunity to gain new skills, qualifications and experience in the profession I really wanted to work in.

Did you come with GCSEs or A Levels?

Yes, I have both.

Did you have a clear idea of what you wanted to do?

Yes, I was previously a health and safety instructor but knew I wanted a more hands on role within that sector.

Why did you decide to work here?

Working for West Suffolk Council has not only given me the opportunity to gain experience and skills whilst working in role I am passionate about but also has the flexibility of agile working which is great for me as a parent.

What did you know about the council before you joined and what have you learnt about it so far?

I knew West Suffolk Council was previously Forest Heath and St Edmundsbury brought into one council and they provided a range of services throughout the district. Since being here I discovered there is a huge network for learning and development and even though I knew they provided a range of services I wasn’t aware of how vast these were.

What apprenticeship are you undertaking, and do you have future plans?

I’m undertaking BSC (HONS) Environmental Health Practitioner Apprenticeship. My plan is once that’s completed hopefully I will secure a permanent role within the council.

What do you enjoy about working here?

I love the diversity of my role being able to go out and learn about other businesses and meet new people.

Apart from your apprenticeship, have you had other opportunities to learn and develop, job-shadow or to be involved in different projects?

Yes, I am really fortunate to have a great team around me who invite me along to shadow them when possible and get involved in various projects.

What advice would you give to future applicants?

Time is precious so go for it!
