Savannah, Families and Communities Intern 2026

As a psychology student at Loughborough University, I first applied for this internship because I wantedSavannah - Families and Communities Intern 2026 to explore different career routes, as my degree is fairly broad. I also really enjoy people-centred roles so families and communities seemed like a good fit. I have never worked in a local-government setting and didn’t know much about it, but, having gone for it, I am super grateful for the opportunity and have loved every second!

Coming into this role, I had worked at multiple HAF-funded holiday camps and also volunteered with children in Thailand and the UK so working with families and young people felt natural. During my 12-week internship, I was involved in a diverse range of projects, both in the office and out in the community, I really enjoyed the combination.

Examples of office work included producing analytical and rfinancial eports which enabled me to develop my data skills massively. I also created a leaflet with healthy eating and signposting guidance, I enjoyed getting creative with this and learning graphic design techniques. Out in the community, I was involved with financial inclusion events like family fun day, parish forum, HAF monitoring visits with a range of providers and crucial crew. Crucial crew involves a vast range of professionals including the fire service and police delivering interactive learning sessions to year 6 pupils. I was able to contribute a lot with the preparation and running of this which was really enjoyable.

I had the flexibility to pick up projects in other areas of interest, so I was able to organise for me and some colleagues to go on the radio to promote our internship and group project. This was a really cool experience! I also got to attend expos, networking events and even co-host webinars.

I have learnt so much and thoroughly enjoyed these 12 weeks and wish it lasted longer! I highly recommend applying, and my advice for future applicants is to be bubbly and enthusiastic – this internship is very social!
