Shakib, Licensing and Regulatory

Photo of Shakib What is your role?

Licensing and Regulatory Apprentice.

When did you start here?

I started in September 2023 and the duration of the apprenticeship is two years.

Why did you choose to do an apprenticeship?

I chose to do an apprenticeship as I believe that going to university would have not provided me with much opportunity to gain practical experience in the work field, therefore, I pursued an apprenticeship as it gives me the practical experience whilst also helping me enhance my knowledge of the role.

Did you come with GCSEs or A Levels?

I came with both.

Did you have a clear idea of what you wanted to do?

I had in mind that I wanted to do an apprenticeship, but not a clear idea of what kind of apprenticeship.

Why did you decide to work here?

I chose to work at here, because of the location, opportunity, and the qualification offered within the apprenticeship which I’m currently undertaking. The apprenticeship programme at the council is providing, aligned with the type of apprenticeship which I was interested in.

What did you know about the council before you joined and what have you learnt about it so far?

Prior to joining, I had done some research on what they do and the impact of the council on the local community. Though, having been at the council only for the last two months, I have been able to get better understanding of the different services which they provide and the importance of the local authority on the community.

What apprenticeship are you undertaking, and do you have future plans?

I am undertaking the Regulatory Compliance Officer, Level 4 apprenticeship. My future plan is to continue pursuing this role to enhance my knowledge and skills in the field.

What do you enjoy about working here?

The work environment is great and so is the flexible working hours as it allows me to manage my time effectively. Everyone is supportive and always willing to help.

Apart from your apprenticeship, have you had other opportunities to learn and develop, job-shadow or to be involved in different projects?

Although, I have not been here for a long time, I have still had many opportunities to go out on visits and shadow environmental health officers carrying out inspections which has helped enhance my understanding of what it is that they are looking out for when doing visits.

What advice would you give to future applicants?

An apprenticeship is a great opportunity to gain hands on experience, whilst also learning about the role which you are doing, if you come across one which interests you, it’s worth applying.
