Tasnia, Families and Communities apprentice

What role are you currently in, and what apprenticeship are you studying?

Apprentice - Families and Communities Team and Suffolk and North East Essex Integrated Care Board. I am completing the Business Administration Level 3 Apprenticeship.

Why did you choose to do an apprenticeship?

I chose an apprenticeship because it suited me much better than going to university, as I learn best through practical experience. I wanted a pathway where I could gain real work experience and knowledge, build my interpersonal skills and professionalism, and learn while actively contributing to a team.

Do you have an idea of what you would like to do after your apprenticeship?

After my apprenticeship, I hope to continue progressing within the council or take on a role supporting with projects and community-focused work.

Did you know about the council before starting your apprenticeship, if so, what?

Yes, I knew the council played a major role in supporting the local community. I also did work experience here prior to starting, and I realised how wide-ranging the council’s work is, such as through planning, housing, learning and development and so much more – it has shown me how much happens behind the scenes to make a difference.

What advice would you give to future applicants?

Be confident in what you can bring, even if you don’t have lots of experience – you’ll learn a lot by doing, and you’ll develop confidence quickly as a result.

Ask questions and be curious – everyone here is really supportive and always happy to help.

Be open to new experiences and step out of your comfort zone – this will help you grow and you’ll get opportunities you may not even expect.

Most importantly, be yourself. Your strengths, personality, and willingness to learn matter more than being perfect.

Name three things have you learnt whilst working at the council:

  • Confidence in communication – from emailing colleagues to meeting new people, I’ve learnt how to communicate professionally and clearly.
  • How local government works – understanding different services, departments, and how they come together to support residents.
  • Organisational and teamwork skills – managing tasks, supporting projects, and working with colleagues.
